Gelco Chimney Cap & Crown Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Chimney Cap & Crown in Peabody: What to Know First

Gelco chimney cap and crown work in Peabody typically runs $285 to $780 depending on whether we’re replacing a cap on a single flue or rebuilding a cracked crown on a multi-flue chase. Most Gelco jobs are done in a single visit, and you’ll know the exact price before a single tool comes off the truck. This page is for homeowners in Peabody’s older neighborhoods – the West End, South Peabody, and the streets around Crystal Lake – who own Gelco caps or crowns and want a straight answer about whether the thing needs fixing or not.

Call (978) 637-8560

If it does need fixing, call (978) 637-8560 and Wendell or one of his crew will pick up. If it does not need doing, we’ll tell you that too.

How Gelco Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

  • Gelco single-flue caps with screen mesh clogging at the crown line. Gelco’s standard single-flue caps use a fine stainless mesh that does a good job keeping animals out but a poor job shedding the leaf litter and pine needles we get in Peabody’s older tree-lined neighborhoods. When that mesh plugs up, draft goes bad fast. We see this most on the Gelco GC-series caps. The fix is pulling the cap, cleaning the mesh, and checking the crown underneath for water intrusion while we’re up there. Sometimes the mesh needs replacement instead of cleaning – we’ll show you which before you pay for either.
  • Gelco multi-flue caps pulling loose in nor’easter wind loads. The Gelco MF-series multi-flue caps are well made, but the factory mounting brackets assume a flat crown surface. Peabody crowns from the 1950s and 60s are rarely flat anymore. When a cap mounts to a settled crown, the wind catches it at an angle, and the bracket screws work loose over a few seasons. We’ve pulled Gelco caps off Peabody chimneys that were hanging on by one screw. Our fix is to re-level the crown surface before remounting, or use a custom bracket set when the crown has too much pitch to shim. Either way, the cap stays put.
  • Gelco stainless crowns showing rust bleed at the seams. Gelco makes a stainless multi-flue crown cover that a lot of Peabody homes got installed in the 1990s and early 2000s. The metal itself holds up, but the caulk at the seam where the crown meets the flue tile does not. Once that caulk fails, water gets between the metal and the masonry, and you get rust staining down the brick. We strip the old seam, re-flash it, and recaulk with a high-temp silicone rated for New England freeze-thaw cycles. It’s a repair, not a replacement, unless we find rot underneath.
  • Gelco draft-inducing caps with broken top plates. The Gelco DI-series has a rotating top plate that’s supposed to improve draft in gusty conditions. Good idea. The problem is the bearing under that top plate, which was never designed for the salt air and ice we get along the North Shore. Once the bearing seizes, the plate stops turning and you just have a noisy cap that rattles. We can replace the bearing assembly if it’s a newer unit, but on older DI-series caps the parts are gone and we recommend a simpler fixed cap. We’ll tell you plainly which one makes sense for your setup.
  • Gelco caps on Peabody’s two-flue chimneys with interior masonry damage hiding underneath. This is the one that gets homeowners in the West End. A Gelco cap looks fine from the ground, but the crown underneath it has been failing for years, and the cap was essentially masking it. By the time we pull the cap, the crown is spalling and water’s been working into the flue for a while. We see this pattern on homes where the cap was installed without addressing the crown first. If a cap sits on a bad crown, the crown keeps breaking up underneath, and the cap eventually shifts. Our process always includes a crown inspection before we touch a cap – and if the crown needs work, we tell you that before we sell you a cap you don’t need.

Our Gelco Chimney Cap & Crown Process

  1. 1
Phone call first. You call (978) 637-8560, a real person answers, and we talk through what you’re seeing. If you’re inside our service county, there’s no trip charge. We’ll also give you a ballpark over the phone – and yes, it’s the same number you’ll see on the invoice.
  2. 2
On-site inspection with camera evidence. We get on the roof, pull the Gelco cap or check the crown, and run a camera down the flue if there’s any question about what’s happening below the surface. You see the footage yourself, on the spot.
  3. 3
Plain-English verdict and a written price. We tell you what’s wrong, what can wait, and what can’t. You get the number before any work starts. If a crown is fine and only the cap needs replacing, you hear that. If the cap is fine and the crown is the problem, you hear that too.
  4. 4
The work itself. For cap work, we check the crown surface before mounting and address any leveling issues. For crown work, we grind out cracks, patch with the right mortar or crown coat, and only then remount or replace the cap. We use OEM Gelco parts when they’re available and still the right choice. When an aftermarket equivalent is genuinely better for Peabody’s conditions, we tell you why before we order it.
  5. 5
Test and show you. We verify draft, check the cap is seated right, and walk you through what we did. You get before-and-after photos of every job.
  6. 6
The 90-Day Done Right Promise. If it’s not right, one call brings us back at no additional cost. In writing, on every Gelco job.

What Gelco Chimney Cap & Crown Costs in Peabody

Straight numbers, the way we quote them on the phone:

Job Typical Range
Single-flue Gelco cap replacement (standard mesh) $285 – $420
Gelco multi-flue cap replacement (MF-series, standard size) $520 – $780
Crown repair (patch and recoat with crown seal) $350 – $650 depending on condition
Full crown rebuild (bad spalling on an older Peabody chimney) $850 – $1,400
Cap removal, crown inspection, and re-mount $180 – $300

What moves the price: chimney height and pitch on those Peabody Colonials with steep roofs, whether the crown needs full rebuild versus a coat, and whether we’re dealing with a single flue or a multi-flue custom size. You get the exact number before work begins. Call (978) 637-8560 for a free estimate – and if you already have a written estimate from another company, bring it. We’ll give you a free second opinion on it.

Why Peabody Homeowners Call Top Hat Chimney for Gelco Work

We are not a national outfit that rotates a new crew through every spring. Wendell Pike started Top Hat Chimney in 1999, and he has been working chimneys on the North Shore ever since – the West End, South Peabody, and the older homes around downtown have kept him busy for over two decades. He grew up in San Diego, learned the trade at Palomar College, and has been running a brush and camera through Peabody flues long enough to have lost count of the inspections somewhere north of a thousand.

We install and service Gelco as an independent Gelco service provider – we are not affiliated with or authorized by the manufacturer. We also work with DuraFlex and HeatShield when a cap or crown issue turns into a liner conversation, so you’re not getting a hard upsell to something we happen to sell. Every job is backed by the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. Phones are answered by a live person around the clock, and it may well be Wendell picking up at midnight. Seniors and veterans always get 10% off. And any repair over $200 takes $40 off, no questions asked.
